Echo walked through Diagon Alley, ignoring the lewd looks she was getting. She was used to those looks and if she hadn’t been looking for someone in particular she would have responded to some of them. As it was, she had a mission. The tall leggy blonde wasn’t looking for a good time, at least not just yet. First, she needed to find Dexter, her sometimes lover and permanent dealer. It seemed that he was ignoring her and while the pretty girl knew where to score what she needed, she was a creature of habit.

So with a sharp turn she made her way into the alley emerging on the other side, in the center of the very infamous Knockturn Alley. It was here that the lowest dredges of wizards roamed and here where she would hopefully find Dexter and her fix.

She knew that she shouldn’t do this. She had been clean for over three weeks now, a record for her. Things were finally starting to look up, which is why she found herself here. She had a bad habit of wrecking her life when things started to get too good. She knew that nothing lasted forever and at least this way she could control the fall. Things weren’t so bad if you were the one that caused it. It was a tragic circle that she called life.

Echo hadn’t always been this way, back at Hogwarts before her seventh year she had been just like any girl. She was popular and beautiful and she thought that it was always going to stay that way. However, that world had come crashing down when her parents died. She had been sent to live with her uncle who broke the young girl. Everything that had come afterward had only made things worse. She was always running from her past, but she could never escape it.

She sighed having run into dead end after dead end. She didn’t know what she would do if today proved to be fruitless. She couldn’t live like this anymore, trying to move toward a better life but keeping a foot in this one. They had told her millions of times before all that was at the end of this road was a casket. She scanned the crowds, distracted and frustrated. She wasn’t paying attention to where she was going. People in Knockturn alley moved out of the way when they saw someone like her. She was dangerous, not because of the spells she knew, rather it was the desperation in her eyes. That was, most people noticed.

Apparently not everyone could sense it because before she knew it she was flat on the ground. Her body having run into something hard coming at her at the same speed. She glared, rising to her feet to meet the perpetrator. “Watch were the fuck you’re going!” she snarled, not noting the hypocrisy in her own words.

Dammit! They had almost had the bastard! Vincent poked his head out from behind the wall gingerly and when he didn't see anyone, he stepped out, his wand at the ready. He didn't want to take any more chances. They had been following this Death Eater for weeks now, and when they were this close, someone had to squeal that there were Aurors in Knockturn Alley! A battle had ensued and now they were short two of their team, leaving only three to take down this lunatic.

Vincent told the others to stay put and take care of their injured team mates. He crept up the abandoned section of the Alley, loooking carefully in every direction before he moved each step. He was not going to be taken by surprise again, not if he could help it.

He made it back to the main populated area of Knockturn Alley without seeing or hearing a sign of the maniac killer. He was starting to think that he'd lost the Death Eater when he saw him almost at the enterance to Diagon Alley. He picked up his pace, not enough for anyone to find suspicious, but enough so that he'd be able to see where the man was heading next.

SHIT! He'd gotten to the exit of Diagon Alley, and they'd lost him again! He had to get back to his team and help them back to the Ministry. They had reports to file, and if they were lucky, their injuries wouldn't be bad enough to keep them off the field. To him that would be the end of his job. He didn't know if he could take working at a desk for a career.

He hurried along the Alley to where his team was holed up and realized that he'd not been looking where he was going when he ran smack into somone coming from the opposite direction. He felt the person fall back away from him and heard them land on the ground. It was a woman's voice that scolded him to watch where he was going, and he looked up to see that it was Echo Salander. He'd been part of the team to deliver her to the custody of Armistad Xandex just a few short weeks earlier. She was supposed to be getting clean, not skulking around Knocturn Alley, looking to get hooked up. It looked as if Armistad wasn't keeping as close an eye on her as he was supposed to be. Maybe it was time to do an evaluation of the situation.

"Well, well! Miss Salander! And why are you in Knockturn Alley today?"

Echo bit her bottom lip before brushing off the nerves that came with seeing the ministry official. She remembered him from her last drop off and she knew he wouldn’t be too pleased to see her here. However, the rebel in her peeked out it’s pretty head. He was in her territory now. This was Echo’s home, these were her people and really all it would take was a little scream of the word Auror and she could disappear into the crowd.

She brushed herself off of any dirt and looked at him. She gave him a winning smile before speaking. “Looking for a gift, however, last I checked, being in Knockturn Alley wasn’t a crime and I didn’t owe you or anyone any explanations,” she responded. Her tone was cold and uncaring. She didn’t have time for this, although, the fact that there were ministry officials here meant that Dexter would be long gone.

She returned a blank stare at the man before her. He was costing her time and money. “Is there anything else you need? Because if not I really have to be on my way. Taking care of business and all that. You understand,” she told him, her gaze focused on a cloaked figure about two streets away. She recognized him and he would, no doubt, have information on Dexter’s whereabouts.

Echo was in desperate need of Dexter. It was the only reason she wasn’t even trying to lie to Vincent. She had bigger things to take care of and as far as she was concerned he didn’t have anything on her. Sure he would tell Armistad but as much as it pained her to say it, it was a risk she was willing to take. She needed to find Dexter.

Vincent crossed his arms as he listened to Echo's explanation of why she was in Knockturn Alley that day. Looking for a gift? Why would she be looking for a gift in the dark art centered section of the Wizarding shopping area? He had the feeling that she was looking for her dealer more than anything else, but he thought he would let her dangle a little bit before he gave her the news. Dexter wasn't going to be around to help her again. He and a few of his fellow Aurors had seen to that. Especially when he'd learned it was Vlad that had destroyed his home, and nearly cost him his wife and unborn child.

He looked her over and saw that she had to be feeling pretty desperate. He knew that it wasn't easy for anyone to get clean, but she was going to have to do it this time, or she was going to be in an institution, with no access to her money until she was thirty, at the absolute earliest, and then only a set amount, much less than she was reportedly getting from Xandex on a monthly basis. The remainder of her expenses would be coming from the account directly.

Vincent knew that he didn't have a real reason to interogate Echo, other than the fact that she was in Knockturn Alley at all. She really had no reason other than Dexter really. He was glad that there would be no more trouble from the man. He'd caused more than enough trouble in the time that the Ministry had been hunting him down.

"Actually, I do have something else. Where is Armistad? He isn't supposed to be letting you out on your own just yet."

Echo watched as he crossed his arms listening to her story. She wasn’t in the mood to deal with this auror right now. There was no need to construct a fake story because as far as she was concerned she wasn’t doing anything wrong. She was in her right to be in Knockturn Alley, although she was a trustee that didn’t mean she wasn’t a capable human being. She knew that this man had connections to Vlad. Everyone had connections to Vlad, although most of them weren’t pleasant. It didn’t matter if he suspected why she was here, he couldn’t prove anything. He had nothing on her and that thought alone made her feel safe.

She noticed his gaze studying her and she scowled at him. She was an addict but normally she showed no signs. Today was a different story. The desperation in her eyes was enough. Still, even if he decided to search her he wouldn’t find anything she wasn’t supposed to have. There was no reason for him to stop her from leaving, although she knew he would call Armis almost as soon as she was gone. That was the best case scenario, worst case scenario he would call Armis this second. She had really been hoping that she would have a chance to explain or at least be high enough when she saw him that she wouldn’t care.

Echo didn’t know what it was about her life that she always ended up back at the same place, with an Auror trying to shake her down and a needle waiting for her not to far away. She could blame her parents, her past, the system that had made her this way but in the end she knew it was something about her. Something in her that attracted the monsters and let loose the one that lived inside of her. She could fight it and live for a while but it would always win, in the end she was a slave to herself just as much as Dexter.

She narrowed her eyes when he said that she wasn’t allowed out. She had read her contract carefully, she always did. It was the only thing that could legally protect her from the abuse her guardians had always given her. This contract with Armis had been no different and there wasn’t a single clause in there that prevented her outings. Sure, Armis had the right to set a curfew but he hadn’t and even if that wasn’t the case she was well within her right to come here during the day.

“I think you’re mistaken Mr. Bauer. I read the order forms, the supervised outing and house arrest only apply if, one I am a minor or two, I have broken three consecutive rules set by my guardian. Seeing as how I’ve done neither there is really no legal reason for me not to be here,” she replied, her voice cold with an underlying rage that was beginning to boil. Echo hated being controlled, it was why she never stayed in one home for too long.

Vincent looked Echo over once more and raised an eyebrow. So, she didn't think that he would call Armistad? He pulled out his phone and dialled the number that he'd been given when Xandex had agreed to take Echo in. After a short conversation, he closed the phone and slipped it back into his pocket. Xandex had been wondering where she was at that moment. It seemed that he'd not been told where she was going.

"How is it that Armistad didn't know where you were? If I remember correctly, he has the house charmed so that no one could get out without him knowing?" He leaned against a wall. "He's coming here, just to make sure that you are in one piece, since he doesn't seem to believe me. He sounded pretty worried about you being missing. More than he should have. Care to explain that?"

He'd been surprised that Armistad had sounded as concerned as he'd been on the phone. This seemed very curious to him, since it was the first time that he'd heard someone be as worried about their charge as Xandex had been. To Vincent, it seemed like the man had been afraid that the woman he loved had left him. It was very curious to Vincent, since he'd not had the instance of any of Echo's previous trustees had had this reaction to her being gone from their charge. They had seemed to be relieved.

Vincent looked at the blonde girl in front of him. Could it be possible? Xandex didn't seem the sort to fall for someone that he had been put in charge of, but stranger things had happened. The Auror didn't hold it against him, in fact, he felt he should commend the other man. Maybe this was what Echo needed. Someone to care for her, and get her through the long process of her rehabilitation.

"You don't want to do this, Echo. Whatever it is that you came here for, you don't want to do it." He hoped that he was wrong in thinking that she was there for drugs, but somehow, he doubted that very much.
